From Placement to Profession
Ethan’s journey began on 22nd September when he was paired with the High Elms team for a two-week work experience placement. Recognising Ethan’s background in biology and conservation, Darren Holland, a DWP Recruitment Specialist, identified him as the perfect candidate for a role within the Rangers team.
What was originally intended to be a short fortnightly stint quickly evolved. Ethan found a genuine passion for the work and chose to extend it from a two-week to four-week placement due to the recommendations of idverde Rangers.
During this time, Ethan was involved in a diverse range of essential activities across Bromley’s woodland sites, including:
- Vegetation clearance and habitat management to improve local biodiversity.
- Species survey work and infrastructure repairs.
Assisting with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) school sessions, where he shared his knowledge of local wildlife with children.
A Natural Fit for the Team
Ethan’s dedication and strong work ethic did not go unnoticed by the Senior Conservation Rangers. When a vacancy arose, Ethan was the standout choice for the position. He officially began his new role on 2nd February 2026.
Ben, Biodiversity Manager at idverde, noted:
“Ethan started work experience with us in September and showed an excellent drive and enthusiasm to learn all he could about our work within the parks. Throughout his volunteering, he has been gathering knowledge about the natural world and shown a keen interest in developing his skills further. We are pleased he has joined the team and are looking forward to seeing where his career path will lead.”
Benefits Beyond the Borough
Darren Holland, Recruitment Specialist at DWP, states, “The partnership between DWP and idverde has grown into something truly extraordinary. What began as a shared commitment to giving people a chance has become a powerful pathway that is transforming lives across our communities.
Watching individuals come through the Jobcentre, step into work experience with idverde, and then flourish into full-time Countryside Rangers like Ethan has been nothing short of inspiring.
This collaboration shows what is possible when belief, opportunity, and support come together. People who once doubted their own potential are now thriving in meaningful roles—protecting landscapes, building new skills, and shaping brighter futures for themselves and their families.
The journey we’ve seen so many participants take is a reminder that with the right partnership, barriers can be broken, confidence can be rebuilt, and careers can emerge from places people never expected. We are incredibly proud of what has been achieved so far, and even more excited for the opportunities still to come.”
