Biodiversity Champions: A Guide to Increasing Biodiversity in Your School – idverde in Partnership with Wiltshire Council

Three schools in Wiltshire participating in the Biodiversity Champions Initiative, and using the free guide, recently received a visit from Eco Edd. Edd Moore met with each school to discuss the importance of increasing biodiversity on their grounds. He highlighted ways to create wildlife-friendly habitats, such as wildflower meadows, ponds, and hedgerows, which support local ecosystems and provide outdoor learning opportunities. Simple steps like installing bird feeders, building bug hotels, and creating compost heaps can help transform even small urban schoolyards into sustainable, biodiverse spaces.

You may ask what Biodiversity is. Biodiversity refers to all living things, such as plants, bacteria, animals, and humans. It is essential for supporting life on Earth. Healthy ecosystems, which rely on a wide variety of species, provide the air we breathe and the food we eat.

Edd noted that joining the Biodiversity Champions Initiative marks the beginning of an exciting journey for schools, pupils, and the biodiversity within their grounds. He hopes this initiative will inspire more schools to participate, protect Wiltshire’s natural heritage, and empower students to make a lasting impact.

The initiative also offers curriculum-linked activities, such as measuring biodiversity, mapping habitats, and exploring nature-based solutions. It includes low-cost ideas, such as repurposing old tyres into planters and using wooden pallets for composting.

Benefits of the Biodiversity Champions Initiative

Education: Offers hands-on experience with nature, life cycles, and environmental conservation.

Wellbeing: Supports student mental health and behaviour by providing calming, natural environments.

Climate Action: Strengthens the school’s contribution to addressing climate change by improving natural spaces.

Edd Moore has been at the forefront of education on the environment and sustainability for over a decade. He has built up a previous primary school’s eco work from a blank canvas to one of the top eco schools in the country, embedding climate action and nature into the school’s curriculum.

Edd guided this school to win several national environmental awards, including Eco Schools Eco Primary School of the Year, Surfers Against Sewage Schools Champion of the Year, and Jane Goodall Roots & Shoots UK Best Group of the Year. He develops sustainability initiatives and programs that benefit pupils and the wider school community.

Jon from The Eaves said about Eco Edd: “This was excellent, really good – kids were great, and the guys who came were awesome too!”

Paul Campbell from On Track Westbury school commented on Eco Edd: “We would like to say how much Edd Moore’s visit was appreciated by both pupils and staff. The Eco Ed presentation was engaging and informative, sparking a great deal of interest among the children. It has inspired many of them to think more about biodiversity and how they can support it in the school environment.”

Darran from Fairfield College shared about Eco Edd: “A really engaging and thought-provoking session which made students and staff think about how we can all play our part in keeping our planet in a good condition for future generations. The students are now primed and eager to complete the Biodiversity booklet. I’ve already had students ask me today when they will start surveying the college site. It was great to see the students so engaged and asking questions.”
