River Nene Clean-Up Weekend

idverde was delighted to support the Heritage Lottery funded Nenescape Landscape Partnership Scheme with the first Northampton River Nene Clean-up operation which took place over the last weekend in September.

Working together with volunteers from the Inland Waterways Association, Carlsberg UK, Buddies of Beckets, Rotary Club of Northampton and members of the Rushden branch of the Maritime Volunteer Service, scrub was cleared from Northampton Lock and litter was picked at South Bridge in the Carlsberg/B&Q area over the two days.

idverde’s Community Engagement Officer, Nicola Clarke, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with the Nenescape Landscape Partnership Scheme to help clean up the River Nene in Northampton. It is really great to see so many volunteers and partners working together to remove litter that is blighting this beautiful landscape.”

Over the course of the weekend over 52 bags of rubbish were collected along with numerous shopping trolleys and other items of fly-tip. It was hard work, but very rewarding to see the banks of the Nene free of rubbish—much to the delight of local dog walkers and members of the public who commented what a fantastic job all the volunteers were doing.

Carlsberg kindly offered the use of their Social Club where refreshments for the hardworking volunteers was served. Given the positive impact the event had upon the local landscape it was felt that holding such an event on an annual basis would be very beneficial.

idverde looks forward to supporting the campaign next year.
