Introduction

To commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, Cllr Phil Larrat and the Friends of Abington Park were invited to plant an English Oak (Quercus robur) within Abington Park in Northampton.

The tree, along with the tree stake, ties and tree guard, was donated by idverde and planted with the help of West Northamptonshire Council and the Friends of Abington Park on the 8th of March, 2022.

About the project

Abington Park is Northampton’s oldest and most popular premier park of approximately 47 hectares located in the designated conservation area of Abington District.

The park is split by a main road, Park Avenue South, into the Upper and Lower Parks. It consists of many fine features which include; Abington Park Museum, a cafe, bandstand, sports facilities, three small lakes, aviaries, children’s play areas, mature specimen trees and woodland copses as well as numerous floral features such as the rose garden and a sensory garden for the blind.

Many of the mature trees within the parkland were planted in the 18th century and it is recognised that new tree planting is necessary to ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy the landscape, whereby there is a succession of mature trees to offer structure to the site, as well as shade and important habitats for wildlife. A number of mature trees within the park were lost during the recent winter storms, so the project was even more vital to the area.

idverde is delighted to work in partnership with West Northamptonshire Council and the Friends of Abington Park in helping to plant new trees within Abington Park that future generations will be able to enjoy.

“The Friends care passionately about Abington Park and we are delighted to be able to support them with the donation of an English Oak tree in celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.” - Nicola Clarke idverde Midlands Development Manager.
