Landmark anniversary of winning nature partnership

We are proud to be celebrating the fifth anniversary of a pioneering partnership which has protected, supported and created natural habitats for wildlife all over the UK.

idverde has been working alongside national wildlife charity the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds), clocking up a raft of nature conservation achievements, since 2017.

Our association began when we asked the charity to support us with managing green spaces in the London Borough of Bromley.

We wanted to further develop our understanding and expertise around biodiversity and wildlife protection after winning the contract with Bromley Council, as it included management of Local Wildlife Sites, Local Nature Reserves and Sites of Special Scientific Interest.

Having seconded an RSPB colleague onto our team on a permanent basis, we have also worked with the charity’s wider team of specialists to ensure we manage these important conservation areas in the most positive, nature-focused way.

We now have six permanent advisers, helping to ensure an emphasis on species and habitat protection in all our projects across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Training and learning from our RSPB colleagues has helped to enhance our team’s surveying and species recording expertise, as well as leading to the development of community-based projects aimed at engaging people with their local environment.

Our partnership’s key achievements over the past five years have included:

  • recording new local species in Bromley’s green spaces
  • a 25% increase in more naturally managed grassland in Bromley
  • attracting almost £156,000 external funding for the council’s habitat projects
  • creating new habitats for butterflies
  • installing more than 100 swift nest boxes across the Midlands.

We are also working on various projects with Wealden District Council, Manchester City Football Club, Telford and Wrekin Council, Warwick District Council, Charnwood Borough Council, West Northamptonshire Council and across Northern Ireland.

Over the next five years and beyond, we plan to extend our work with the RSPB across our contracts in order to support wildlife, promote a range of different species and enhance biodiversity.

Our future plans include:

  • a new biodiversity action plan and further habitat restoration work across Bromley
  • developing grazing programmes to support wildlife-rich grassland
  • regenerating more woodland, wetland and wild grassland areas
  • continuing our Brilliant Butterflies habitat creation project
  • supporting bee conservation projects across the Midlands, in line with our work with the Bumblebee Conservation Trust
  • launching our new Help a Hog hedgehog conservation campaign in Charnwood
  • supporting swift conservation schemes across the East Midlands
  • working with partners to rewild roadside verges for the Blue Heart Campaign and create bee-friendly roads in Leicestershire
  • engaging with communities for National Nest Box Week activities
  • advising on increasing biodiversity across the Northern Ireland Housing Executive’s estate.

We look forward to working with the RSPB on these various initiatives, so we can continue making a positive difference for wildlife and local communities across the UK for many years to come.
