Biodiversity Buzz | Building a Nest Box

National Nest Box Week, which takes place between the 14th and 21st of February each year, is a celebratory period that hopes to encourage more people to help the birds by putting up nest boxes.

New figures from the Avian Population Estimates Panel (APEP) suggest that there are around 83 million pairs of native breeding birds in the UK. This is 19 million pairs fewer than when widespread monitoring began in the late 1960s. 

The decline is thought to be primarily caused by changes in agriculture, which has resulted in a loss of habitat diversity needed by birds to survive. Another reason is the rise in popularity of artificial gardens.

Making your garden friendly for birds

You can make small changes to your garden to attract birds. Installing a bird feeding station in your garden and filling it with their favourite food can boost visitor numbers. You can also provide them with a safe nesting spot by building them a nest box. Now is especially a great time to add a nest box to your garden as birds are pairing up for the new breeding season.
