National Nest Box Week, which takes place between the 14th and 21st of February each year, is a celebratory period that hopes to encourage more people to help the birds by putting up nest boxes.
New figures from the Avian Population Estimates Panel (APEP) suggest that there are around 83 million pairs of native breeding birds in the UK. This is 19 million pairs fewer than when widespread monitoring began in the late 1960s.
The decline is thought to be primarily caused by changes in agriculture, which has resulted in a loss of habitat diversity needed by birds to survive. Another reason is the rise in popularity of artificial gardens.
