Join the Wiltshire Biodiversity Champions Initiative

Wiltshire is home to an extraordinary range of landscapes, habitats, and species—many of which are of national and international importance. Schools, nurseries, early years settings and youth groups across the county are uniquely placed to help protect this natural heritage by inspiring young people to connect with the environment and become future stewards of their local ecosystems.

That’s why we’re proud to launch the Wiltshire Biodiversity Champions initiative, a collaborative programme created by idverde UK, Wiltshire Council and Edd Moore Council. This initiative supports education settings of all sizes to enhance biodiversity, embed environmental learning, and create greener spaces for wildlife and communities to thrive.

Launching in March, participating settings will receive guidance and support to:

  • Create wildlife‑friendly spaces
  • Boost biodiversity on their grounds
  • Empower young eco‑leaders
  • Learn practical, everyday actions to support nature
  • Embed environmental education across the curriculum

As part of this programme, settings will also have access to the Wiltshire Schools Biodiversity Guide, developed and kindly shared by environmental educator Edd Moore. With more than twelve years of experience in sustainability education, Edd has helped schools achieve national recognition for their environmental work. His guide—packed with surveys, ideas, and practical activities—provides a clear path for schools to assess, understand, and increase biodiversity on their grounds.

Understanding and supporting biodiversity is vital. Every living thing—plants, insects, birds, mammals, fungi, and even microscopic organisms—plays an essential role in creating healthy ecosystems. These ecosystems provide us with clean air, food, and the foundations for life. By nurturing biodiversity within school grounds, children experience these systems first‑hand, enhancing learning, improving well‑being, and developing a deeper appreciation for nature.

Whether your setting has a large playing field, a small courtyard, or something in between, every action makes a difference.

Together, we can help young people build a lifelong connection with nature while contributing to a greener, more resilient Wiltshire.
