Helping children to add colour and cheer to their school grounds

Colleagues from idverde’s Westbury contract were delighted to join staff and pupils at Devizes’ Holy Trinity CE Primary Academy in early December to plant 150 bedding plants and nearly 200 bulbs

The project

Green space management company, idverde works with over 200 schools in South West England, providing a range of horticultural, arboricultural, and grounds maintenance services.

Staff from idverde’s Westbury contract were delighted to join staff and pupils at Devizes’ Holy Trinity CE Primary Academy in early December to plant 150 bedding plants and nearly 200 bulbs that will provide extra colour and cheer in the school grounds.

The idverde team also presented the school with a silver birch tree as a gift, which was planted with great care on the day, with assistance from the school’s enthusiastic pupils.

idverde’s local Westbury contract team has forged an excellent working relationship with Holy Trinity CE Primary Academy.  During a site visit with the school’s head teacher, Mercedes Henning, idverde Contract Manager, Kevin Bowler, suggested a planting day at the school that would see 178 bulbs planted (one for each child at the school), along with a silver birch tree, all donated by idverde.

With the project agreed, Ian Perry, Nick Johns, and Nathan Wicheard from idverde’s Westbury contract visited the school on 8th December to dig a trench in preparation for the bulbs to be planted.

The next day, the team returned to the school to join the children in planting 178 spring bulbs, including daffodils, tulips, and hyacinths, as well as a selection of bedding plants, and the new silver birch tree.

The children were excited to get involved, and were soon busy learning how to plant the bulbs. It was not long before all the bulbs and plants were planted in the prepared trench, and the children are now excitedly looking forward to seeing them grow and flower in the spring.

Holy Trinity CE Primary Academy head teacher, Mercedes Henning, said: “It was really lovely to encourage the children’s view of the environment. It is our priority to promote this and we wanted to enlarge the Bluebell Wood by 50% into a proper piece of woodland area to do forest work. It is great for adventures for the children. We were surprised you offered this up with no cost and it will improve our education in science, poetry and other parts of the curriculum, and give the children a richer sense of and duty of care to the environment. Thank you so much for arranging this event.”

idverde Contract Manager, Kevin Bowler, added: “This was a fantastic opportunity to work with Holy Trinity School and help with the children’s development and understanding of the environment. We would like to thank the school for their help in co-ordinating this. A great time was had by all – the kids loved it and the idverde team was delighted to be involved.”
