The Rudloe Wombles litter-picking group has been formally recognised by Wiltshire Council and idverde for their significant contribution to the Box Parish community. The award ceremony took place on Friday, 6 June 2025, at The Quarrymans Arms on Box Hill Common. To mark the occasion, Butcombe Brewing Company generously provided a buffet lunch in celebration of the group’s achievements.
Since 2017, the Rudloe Wombles have met on the first Sunday of each month to collect litter across the local area. On average, they gather 12 bags per session, each weighing approximately 1kg. This equates to 144kg—or 1.08 tonnes—of litter removed from the environment annually.
idverde, in partnership with Wiltshire Council, supports litter collection efforts across Wiltshire’s A, B, and C roads. They provide essential equipment such as litter pickers and bags, and arrange for the collected waste to be recycled. The Rudloe Wombles are also affiliated with the Keep Britain Tidy charity, which provides risk assessment training and insurance for volunteers working on public roads.
The award was presented to Paul Turner of the Rudloe Wombles by Paul Ashman, Community Engagement Manager at idverde, and Craig Campbell, Streetscene Area Manager for Wiltshire Council. The event was attended by members of Box Parish Council, the Box Hill Common Community Orchard team, and local Wiltshire Councillor Peter Wragg.
During the ceremony, the group expressed their gratitude for the ongoing support from Wiltshire Council, idverde, Box Parish Council, the Community Payback Team, and the Cotswolds Voluntary Wardens (CVW). Paul Ashman also presented the group with additional equipment to aid their future litter-picking activities.
The event highlighted the strong community spirit within Box Parish and the positive impact of collaborative environmental initiatives. Both Wiltshire Council and idverde reaffirmed their commitment to supporting projects that enhance local green spaces for the benefit of both wildlife and residents.
