Northern Ireland Apprenticeship Week

26 to 30 April 2021 marks Apprenticeship Week in Northern Ireland. We spoke to Northern Ireland based apprentices Craig and Mark to find out about their experiences as apprentices at idverde.

Craig Boston based in Templepatrick

Craig joined idverde in August 2019, two months after finishing school. He is currently working towards a Level 2 in Work-based Horticulture.

Why did you decide to do this Apprenticeship?

I decided to do this apprenticeship because I like being outdoors doing things such as cutting grass and hedges. Also, I had already done my work experience with idverde a year prior to joining the company, so I had a good idea what the company does and I was interested in coming back.

Tell us about a recent day at work

I was using different machines – the Ferris and Kubota – up around Ballymena and Green Island.

Craig

What’s an interesting fact you’ve learned during your Apprenticeship so far?

Everything really, because when I started my apprenticeship everything was new to me, so everything is an interesting fact.

What are the best things about being an Apprentice?

Everything has been good so far because I get to learn how to use big machines and how to do work the way all the other workers do it so that I can do it the right way.

Why would you recommend people take up an Apprenticeship with idverde?

I would recommend it to anyone who’s looking at doing an apprenticeship because in the long run it’ll benefit whoever does it and give you a qualification.

Where would you like to be in five years?

I would like to be employed by idverde still and hopefully have more qualifications such as my Level 3 in horticulture or other things such as my trailer licence, chainsaw licence, etc.

What does Craig’s tutor say?

Craig has come on really well. He works well within the team and he shows a lot of potential.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with us, Craig.

Mark

Mark Mitchell based at Ballyclare

Mark joined idverde in 2018, and is working towards a Level 2 in Work-based Horticulture.

Why did you decide to do this Apprenticeship?

I was offered the chance to complete the apprenticeship when I started with idverde.

Tell us about a recent day at work

I was digging shrub beds, cutting down metal fences, and cutting out footpaths.

What’s an interesting fact you’ve learned during your Apprenticeship so far?

Everything was new to me and I’ve gained experience from all areas.

What are the best things about being an Apprentice?

Everyone is willing to help and you feel more comfortable with the support.

Why would you recommend people take up an Apprenticeship with idverde?

It’s a great learning experience for the younger generation and a way to get hands on experience.

What advice would you give to anyone considering doing an Apprenticeship?

Show up to classes and trust the process.

Where would you like to be in five years?

I hope to still be with idverde and to gain more experience through further courses.

What does Craig’s tutor say?

Mark is really progressing well in his role with idverde. He is a pleasure to work with and is very eager to learn the different aspects of the work.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with us, Mark.
