The London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham

The London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham

The London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham has a population of approximately 182,500 and benefits from a long frontage along the River Thames. The borough’s heritage, streets, buildings, open spaces and waterways give H&F its character and sense of place.

H&F has relatively little open space per person (1.3ha per 1,000 residents), but has some fine parks, many of which have been awarded Green Flag status.

idverde’s contract with The London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham includes the maintenance of the five principal parks using Green Flag principles; the maintenance of 43 other parks, including sports pitches and horticultural features; maintenance of two working cemeteries; open space areas including housing sites; school grounds including sports pitches; cleansing of toilets and changing rooms and the inspection of playgrounds.

The London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham has a clear set of strategic priorities for their parks and open spaces which idverde will assist with achieving. The aim is to improve the quality of life for all people in Hammersmith and Fulham through the provision of award-winning parks and open spaces that are clean, green, safe and sustainable, by;

  • Protecting Hammersmith and Fulham’s existing parks and open spaces.
  • Providing open spaces, play spaces and access to local biodiversity.
  • Creating safe, attractive and accessible spaces for all.
  • Improving the standard of management and maintenance.
  • Actively involving the community in their local open spaces.
  • Increasing participation in open spaces.

One of the innovative ways in which we are striving to achieve these objectives is by working in partnership with Groundwork, the Environment Regeneration Charity who provide training opportunities for the long-term unemployed. We provides the training ground for an average of twelve trainees at any one time in Hammersmith and Fulham and have taken on 16 of these into full time employment in recent years.

In order to support Hammersmith & Fulham Council in its goal to be the most environmentally positive borough in the country, idverde and the council have adopted the chemical-free Foamstream system for weed control rather than chemical-based solutions such as glyphosate, with five Foamstream systems now in use on idverde’s operations throughout the borough. idverde will continue to work with the council to reduce its environmental impact wherever possible.

1) – There may be times in the year when cutting the grass will be detrimental (wet conditions, dry spells) and therefore this operation may not be undertaken/required

(2) – If nesting birds are present, then hedge cutting may be deferred until such point as it can be legally carried out without causing disturbance

(3) The non-chemical weed treatment now carried out in parks, cemeteries and housing estates is Foamstream; this is a combination of hot water/steam with a non-chemical/non-toxic foam additive
