Congratulations to idverde UK’s Paul Sellars who has been recognised as one of the horticultural industry’s ‘ones to watch’ in this year’s 30 under 30 competition, run by Pro Landscaper Magazine.
The annual competition was launched in 2015 to recognise and promote young talent within the horticultural and landscaping industry.
Aged 23, Paul Sellars is an Advanced Apprentice based on idverde UK’s Southwark Council grounds maintenance contract and was nominated by idverde UK senior contract manager, Terry Burns and Peckham Rye Park head gardener, Sissel Dahl.
Paul joined Quadron Services (now part of idverde UK) in 2015 as a horticultural apprentice, based in Southwark’s Peckham Rye Park. Having worked hard to complete his Level 2 Diploma in Horticulture, Paul is now a member of a two-person mobile horticultural team in the Geraldine Mary Harmsworth operational area of idverde UK’s Southwark contract and is working towards his next qualification, the Level 3 Diploma in Horticulture. His other achievements include receiving the London Gardens Society Award for Showing Pride in London by the Cultivation of Flowers and Shrubs, and winning Quadron idverde’s company-wide Employee of the Month Award for his support at an activity day with corporate volunteers in Peckham Rye Park.
Head Gardener, Sissel Dahl, who mentored Paul during the first year of his apprenticeship, says: “Paul has been an asset to the team from day one and is very keen to learn and study, always asking questions to broaden his knowledge, as well as putting forward ideas and suggestions. He tackled several different projects at Peckham Rye Park with enthusiasm and energy and is focussed on achieving targets and completing work to a good standard. Paul is well-liked, and is confident and friendly leading groups of volunteers. I am sure he will become a very good team leader and later, a head gardener.”
Paul says: “I am delighted to have made the list as one of Pro Landscaper’s 30 under 30. My dad got me a job gardening three years ago and I loved it, so I jumped at the chance to join Quadron’s apprenticeship scheme. From personal experience, I think it is a great idea for young people to join this industry. You learn so much here and you meet all sorts of new people in the parks – colleagues, members of the public, and groups of volunteers – and it’s great to share what I’ve learned about gardening and landscaping with them, as well as feeling proud to see them enjoying the work we’ve done.”
“Now that I’m part of a mobile team I’m seeing lots of different parks and am learning more and more every day. My career goal is to continue bettering myself and to keep expanding my knowledge of the landscaping industry so that I can hopefully work my way up the ladder at idverde.”
Paul joined Pro Landscaper’s 29 other ‘30 under 30’ winners at the FutureScape exhibition at Sandown Racecourse on 15th November for an awards ceremony and gala dinner.
We wish Paul every success as he continues his career with idverde UK.
