About the role

We are looking for a Grave Digger/Grounds Maintenance Operative to join our team based at Mendip.

Role Responsibilities

  • To be the first point of contact for Cemetery users and clients in person. To provide a high quality, welcoming and personable service, ensuring timely and appropriate responses to deliver customer satisfaction.
  • To organise and undertake effectively and efficiently, appropriate levels of service delivery.
  • To ensure that appropriate consideration is given to the beliefs of the funeral cortège, and the funeral party.
  • General maintenance and horticultural landscaping duties, including the interpretation of plans and drawings.
  • To ensure that all grave digging and or grounds maintenance work meets appropriate standards, as direct by the supervising the office, particularly, health and safety considerations as they apply to grave digging.
  • To ensure appropriate consideration is given to the beliefs of the funeral cortège, and the funeral party.
  • To maintain essential equipment and Depot areas in a proper condition
  • To work effectively as a member of a team.
  • To provide a grave-digging service, including the safe excavation and shoring of graves as dictated by ground conditions.
  • To ensure that all graves are suitable in dimensions to receive the casket or coffin prescribed.

Skills/Qualifications and Experience

Basic knowledge of and ability to carry out horticultural and or grounds person tasks;

  • tree, shrub and bedding plant planting
  • turfing and grass seed sowing
  • turf care and mechanical operations
  • hedge cutting and skilled shrub pruning
  • chemical control spraying under the direction
  • Ability to excavate grave spaces and knowledge of dimensions and location of grave spaces, ensuring all graves are dug to for the required dimensions.
  • Ability to provide grave-digging service, including the safe excavation and shoring as dictated by ground conditions.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and the use of ladders e.g. working in graves.
  • Ability to move headstones/memorials with suitable tools available
  • Ability to communicate appropriately with the public using diplomacy and tact where necessary.
  • Ability to carry out general administrative tasks e.g. timesheets malicious damage or accident reports.
  • Ability to where necessary to work in all weather, to complete essential work.
  • Ability to undertake any specific training/personal development when required either in the house or externally.


  • Have experience in the use of 180 degree and 360-degree excavators.
  • Have experience digging graves by hand.
  • Have experience in using a wide range of horticultural machinery including operation/driving of machinery, plant and vehicles provided for the operation of cemeteries or related activities.
  • Experience and competence in the operation of cemeteries
  • ICCM COTS 1, 2
  • PA1 and PA6


  • Valid driving license and ability to drive a car and or van
