To kick off National Gardening Week, idverde’s Operations Director and keen gardener, Alistair Bayford, is sharing with you how to grow your own runner beans at home. This is a fun task to do with your children during the current lockdown period.
Alistair finds sowing runner beans in pots much more successful than directly in the ground. You can start Runner Bean seeds off in small pots and transplant them later on.
Step-by-step guide:
1. Simply select your beans – for this example, I’m growing Streamline for their reliable and extra-long crops.
2. Find a pot (you’ll need a few) and fill with compost
3. Take one of the beans and place it on the compost
4. Using your thumb, push the bean in to 5cm (2 inch) deep and back-fill the hole you’ve made.
5. Watch it grow and remember to keep it watered.
Runner Beans will germinate in about a week and grow very quickly. Check out this time-lapse video of Alistair’s runner beans growing:
