Learn to sow your own runner beans | National Gardening Week 2020

By April 27, 2020 May 17th, 2020 Blog, Media, News

To kick off National Gardening Week, idverde’s Operations Director and keen gardener, Alistair Bayford, is sharing with you how to grow your own runner beans at home. This is a fun task to do with your children during the current lockdown period.

Alistair finds sowing runner beans in pots much more successful than directly in the ground.  You can start Runner Bean seeds off in small pots and transplant them later on.

Step-by-step guide:

1. Simply select your beans – for this example, I’m growing Streamline for their reliable and extra-long crops.

1. Beans  1a. Beans
2. Find a pot (you’ll need a few) and fill with compost

2. Pot  3. Fill soil
3. Take one of the beans and place it on the compost

4. take a bean  5. Place bean on the soil
4. Using your thumb, push the bean in to 5cm (2 inch) deep and back-fill the hole you’ve made.

6. Push to inch depth
5. Watch it grow and remember to keep it watered.

7. watch it grow
Runner Beans will germinate in about a week and grow very quickly. Check out this time-lapse video of Alistair’s runner beans growing:
