In honour of it being National Apprenticeship Week 2015, I decided to write about my experience of joining The Landscape Group as a Human Resources apprentice.
Being new to Human Resources, the Higher Apprenticeship in Human Resources Management felt both a daunting and challenging journey. However, since starting with The Landscape Group in November 2014, my knowledge has increased significantly and with the support from the Company and the HR Team, I have the foundations and support network to enable me to continually develop in my career.
My role as HR Apprentice is something that I am passionate about and I am dedicated to enhancing my knowledge and achieving results. Through my supportive colleagues, I am able to undertake this challenging, yet rewarding journey to achieve a Level 5 CIPD in Human Resources Management and secure the foundations to develop as a HR Professional. No day is the same in my role and I am always faced with a new challenge and someone different to talk to. When I started in November, I had no knowledge of HR and relied solely on my previous role in Recruitment and my personal skills and qualities to ensure my success.
In my four months at The Landscape Group, I have developed an appreciation of the industry and what the Company does. I have had training on the HR System where I can provide support to other colleagues, developed an understanding of policies and procedures, had exposure to Disciplinary meetings and outcomes, visited a contract to develop an appreciation of our Company and taken on administrative responsibilities including providing regular information to the Senior Team. My confidence has grown through the efficient and dedicated training I have received and as I continue to participate in a range of activities, I am able to reflect on these and use these experiences as evidence to support my Apprenticeship.
As my day is varied and has ever changing priorities, generalising a typical day is not possible, however I am able to caption a recent day to provide some insight into my role and responsibilities:
A day in the life of a Human Resources Apprentice – Thursday 26th February 2015
My day began with a meeting with my colleague in order to establish our priorities both individually and as a team, ensuring that we are meeting the demands of the business. This enables us to work as a team to distribute our work load accordingly.
I have recently been involved in a number of projects as per our HR Team Strategic Plan for 2015. Having recently completed the first aspect of my project whereby I created a recruitment tracker and allocated recruitment requirements amongst my team, I met my deadline for my second project.
For this project, I was required to analyse and evaluate our current electronic filing system for all documents and design and implement a new structure. In this, I engaged with stakeholders and created a comprehensive draft which I presented to the team. Upon agreeing with the new design, I dedicated my morning to ensure this new system was implemented, thus completing my second project of 2015.
On completion of this, I focused on the system and meeting the recruitment demands of the business. I created a number of vacancies to enable the contracts to hire new staff. I also play a prominent role in assisting with the management of recruitment activities and sifted through CVs and including negotiating a rate of 10% of annual salary with an agency.
My day also consisted of Employee Relations and I drafted and sent out an invite to a disciplinary and created a disciplinary pack for this which included investigation notes and correspondence letters which I sent to the Manager in preparation of the disciplinary. In addition, I pulled data from the system and mail merged letters to be posted out and pulled a report for the Senior Team to provide a weekly headcount and recruitment update.
